Carnival is the great winter celebration in Lanzarote, with the Arrecife Carnival as its centrepiece and its own carnivals in Tías (Puerto del Carmen), Yaiza (Playa Blanca), San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tinajo and Haría. Each edition revolves around a theme and blends the opening address, murgas, comparsas, the election of queens (adult, children's and seniors'), a Drag gala in some towns, the grand parade and the Burial of the Sardine as its finale. The dates shift every year with Lent.
