Canary Islands Day marks the first session of the Canarian Parliament on 30 May 1983 and celebrates island identity. Squares fill with folk music (timple, drum, isa and folía), traditional costume, Canarian food and 'magos' dances, alongside displays of native games and sports such as Canarian wrestling, lateen-sail regattas, the shepherd's leap and plough-lifting. Many schools and towns hold romerías and cultural events.
