Canarian Wrestling (season and traditional bouts)

Canarian wrestling is the islands' native sport and a mark of identity, inherited from the pre-Hispanic inhabitants and well rooted in Lanzarote (with a tradition in villages such as Tías and Uga). It is fought in the 'terrero', a sand circle around 17 metres across, between two teams that try to bring their opponents to the ground through strength, technique and fair play. Beyond the league and island and regional tournaments, village patronal fiestas often include bouts as a traditional highlight.
