This is Lanzarote's most important festival and one of the largest pilgrimages in the Canaries, declared of Tourist Interest. The devotion was born from the Timanfaya eruptions (1730-1736): tradition holds that the Virgin miraculously stopped the lava flows, which is why she is known as the Virgin of the Volcanoes. On 14 September thousands of pilgrims in traditional dress walk in for the offering, and on the 15th come the solemn Mass and procession; around the fiesta run the Nanino Díaz Cutillas Folklore Festival and the Island Craft Fair.
